Registration Facts |
• |
Your advisor must electronically grant permission for you to register online. Dr. Poon will not do so unless you meet with him to discuss your class choices, alternates, and other academic goals. This will be true each and every semester during class registration. |
• |
1st year students are the very last to register. As a result, many of the most popular classes are already full from sophomore, junior, and senior registration. |
• |
Classes may fill up before your registration time. Be prepared with alternates. |

Strategies For Registering For Classes |
• |
Use the course schedule website to start looking for classes. The "Classic Course Schedule" tab allows you to see all the course subjects simultaneously. The "Course Schedule" tab has more information about each class (prereqs, permission required, other restrictions, textbooks, etc.). Use the "More Search Options" link to perform targeted schedule planning (Dr. Poon will demonstrate). |
• |
If a course you wish to take requires the instructor's permission, use the "Request a PERMission to enroll authorization" link. Your written comments that accompany this request should:
• provide BRIEF background info about yourself and why you are interested in the course
• indicate that you are a serious student and are serious about the course (if possible, indicate how you could contribute to the course)
• be polite/respectful |
• |
Email or call the instructor for permission if the PERMission link is not available. If you don't receive a reply, don't take it personally. The prof. may be frantically trying to prepare for the start of the semester or be busy with advising. Instead, show up on the 1st day of class (see below). |
• |
Select 10 or more courses you'd like to take (write them down) |
• |
Prioritize the list |
• |
Bring the list and your registration form with you to your appt with Dr. Poon |
• |
At least one hour prior to your registration time, check the status of the courses you plan to register for |
• |
Be ready to register at the very start of your registration time. Work fast (after all, you are competing with all those other students across campus to get into classes with limited spaces). This is why having your list of 10 desired courses will come in handy. |
• |
If a class you really want is full, go to it on the first day. Bring a permission form with you for the prof. to sign in case some spots open up. |
