Acidity and Basicity (20 min)

This tutorial provides an approach for qualitatively determining the relative acidity or basicity of an acid or base. (Runtime = 19:29)

Student Learning Outcomes
After viewing this tutorial and practicing problems from this website and your textbook, you should be able to:
• Classify any part of a molecule as being acidic, basic, or neither.
• Recognize some of the factors (e.g. resonance, induction, etc.) that contribute to the stability or instability of a chemical
species...as your ochem studies progress, you will be introduced to more of these factors.
• Understand how the strength of an acid or base affects the equilibrium in an acid-base reaction.
• Determine the relative strengths of two or more acids or bases given their pKa's, pKb's, or chemical structures.

Practice Problems
Here are some problems to get you started. You should first try each on a piece of paper. Then, place your cursor over the graphic and click on right arrow that appears to see the answer. The right and left arrows allow you to move back and forth between problems. Please note that these are not the only types of problems/questions that exist on this topic. Refer to your textbook and any problems your instructor provides you for more practice with this subject.
